English Expressions used in Greetings

Since almost all conversations start with some sort of greeting, knowing common expressions for greetings is a must. Examples of some common English expressions used in greetings are listed below.

Hi
Hello
What’s up?
How’s it going?

When you meet and greet someone for the first time introductions are needed. There are a number of standard expressions that can be used for introductions. Some of the most common are listed below.

English Expressions Used for Introductions
 

    Greeting: Hello, I’m ( … Bill).
    Response: Hi Bill, I’m Sandra.
    Greeting: My name is ( … Jimmy Grant).
    Response: Nice to meet you Jimmy, I’m Sally.
    Greeting: I’m (… Gary Phillips). What’s your name?
    Response: My name is Sam Hanks. It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Phillips.
    Greeting: I’m (… George Fredricks). And you are?
    Response: My name is Sally Edwards. It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Fredricks.
Expressions for Farewells
 
Just as there are several standard expressions for greetings, there are also expressions of farewell. Listed below are some of the most common.

          Goodbye                   Bye
          So long                     Catch you later
          I have to run              I have to be going now
         See you latyer            Later

Find a partner and practice using English expressions greetings and introducing in the following situations.

A new coworker in the department you work in at a company
An unknown person at a party that you find interesting
A stranger you meet at a resort on a skiing vacation
