English used in a restaurant

Knowing common English phrases used in restaurant can be very helpful for English learners to ensure that their dining experience is as pleasant as possible.

Eating out is fun and exciting. It allows one to experience new taste sensations. It allows one to see unique dining settings and ambiances. It allows one to save time and effort since someone else does the cooking; and cleaning up.

There are any number of English phrases used in a restaurant you are likely to utilize. Below are just a few of them.

    Waiter: May I take your order?
    Guest: Could I have a few minutes, please?
    Waiter: Are you ready to order sir?
    Guest: Yes, I would like a cheese burger and fries.
    Waiter: How would you like ( … your steak)?
    Guest: Well done.
    Waiter: Would you like ( …baked or mashed potatoes).
    Guest: I’ll prefer baked please.
    Waiter: What would you( … like to drink)?
    Guest: Yes, I’ll have an iced tea.
    Waiter: May I get you (…anything else).
    Guest: No, I’m fine thanks.
    Guest: Could I have another ( … roll, please)?
    Waiter: Of course, I will bring it right away.
    Guest: Can I look at (the…menu)?
    Waiter: Here you go sir.
    Guest: This soups is (… cold. Could you have the chef heat it up)?
     Waiter: Right away, ma’am.
    Guest: I ordered (… a ham sandwich, but this is a chesse burger. Could you bring me the correct order).
    Waiter: I’m sorry sir. I’ll bring the ham sandwich right away.

Once you have eaten you may describe the food just eaten to your dining companion. Or to see if you might like it, you may ask the waiter to describe a particular dish. There are a number of words that can be used to describe food. Look at these examples.

Practice Activities
